You are probably like me and are always on the lookout for ways to engage students. I like to incorporate many different ways for students to experience music that is at higher levels in Bloom’s Taxonomy. Music teachers love to create, perform, and compose. These activities are also more engaging for students because they allow them to express themselves and make choices.
To build a student’s knowledge, there are many things to learn (like vocabulary). This type of learning is usually at the bottom of Bloom’s taxonomy and can be difficult to engage students.
This is why I am in love with online quizzes or trivia games. Kahoot is one example. Others include Quizzizz and Gimkit. These websites are popular because students love them. Kids as young as first grade ask me every time I see them if we can play.
Blooket is a new tool that you could incorporate TOMORROW into your classroom if you relate to this, or if you need a way to increase engagement for the different types of learners you are working with (from virtual to in-person and everything in between).

Blooket: A New Take on Trivia and Review Games
What is Blooket?
Blooket, a relatively new website for online quizzes or trivia options is available to teachers. It’s a website and not an app. After you sign up for a teacher’s account, you can either create your own “sets of questions” on any topic you like or search other educators’ “sets”. Students can play games based on each set of questions.
Blooket is different from other websites I’ve used with my students because the same questions can be used for a variety of game styles. The teacher can choose to host Gold Quests, Battle Royales, Classic games (think Kahoot), and 5 other options.
Enter the pin that you receive once you begin hosting a game on the website blooket.com/play. The majority of games are self-paced and don’t require students to be able to see the teacher’s screen. This is a great choice if you want to play with virtual students. Students can play the games at the same time, or they can be given homework to finish within a certain time frame.
As I explored the site and played a few games, I found that there were some very clear advantages. You should also consider a few things before you try it with your students.
How does Blooket work?
Blooket allows teachers to create a free account with only their email address. You can create games instantly using pre-built questions, or you can use a completely custom build. Teachers can either assign codes to their students or create a completely custom game.
Blooket’s quiz section is pretty standard. It offers questions with large colored blocks to indicate the answers. Students of all levels can easily select the answer and move forward by clicking on it. After the questions have been answered and the points earned, the answers can be used to play the game.
Students can earn food by answering questions in Cafe mode. In Tower of Doom students can choose characters to fight against other players, answering questions in order to win. There is also the classic Tower Defense game, which many students have probably played in some form.

What are the best Blooket features?
Blooket’s super-easy to use for both students and teachers. It can therefore be used by a variety of age groups and abilities.
Teachers can easily divide students into groups using the randomizing feature. The points awarded can also be randomly assigned, which helps to remove the competition based on speed from the games.
The games are addictive and students will likely return to them even when they’re not in class. Teachers can create questions easily, which is great because when students want to play the games they can already have learning materials ready to go.
It is great that students can earn coins and points to use in the game. This keeps them interested and motivated to keep playing. You may be asked to enter an email address to create an account. This is not legal for children under 13.
How much does Blooket cost?
Blooket has three subscription levels to choose from, as well as group pricing based on quotations.
You can create and host your own games. There are also unique game modes and question sets to search.
You can also choose Plus for $2.99 a month, payable annually at $35.88. This includes enhanced game reports, access to early events, exclusive features, bonus tokens for students, options to copy and duplicate sets, priority support, and student bonus tokens.
Plus Flex is $4.99 per month and includes all of the above, but you can pay monthly to cancel at any time.

Blooket best tips and tricks
Adapt the existing material
You can quickly get started by searching the available question sets and editing them to meet your specific needs.
Set the speed
You can adjust the settings so that speed is not as important. This will relieve students of some pressure.
Rewarding the class
As a class exit ticket, create a quiz to review what has been taught. As students complete their assignments, they can start the game. This will encourage them to pay attention, do the work, and play, which is still learning.
How to Start a Blooket: Creating your Set
It’s also easy to import content if you already have it! You’ll then be taken to a template page after clicking the “Create Set” tab. From there, you can fill in the title, description and images for your set.
Next, add your multiple-choice questions. The layout is easy to use and has four options for answers, just like the state tests. If needed, you can add images. You can also set a timer for each question to improve fluency.
Pros:
Blooket is Free
It is important to remember …., but I am also concerned about the future. Many apps and websites may change with the increase in popularity. It is not guaranteed to remain free. You can already upgrade your account for a fee.
Self Paced
Many games allow students to work at their own speed in answering questions. The students do not need to wait until a certain time has passed or everyone has answered a question to move on to the next..
Competitive
Students are encouraged to compete with each other through the game options. The game options always include a chance element, which keeps students engaged and makes competition fun.
Same questions, different game
You don’t have to create a separate game for every set of questions. You can choose from a number of different games using only one set of questions in your teacher account. These sets can either be created by yourself or found using the website’s search feature.
SUPER engaging
The game options were a hit with my fifth graders! The teacher from the next store even came to watch us because our students were so loud. It was loud when students were naming the notes on the staff of treble clef, so I’ll take it.

Cons:
Students have to read the questions.
The teacher can’t read every question because students work at their own pace. There is also no built-in immersive reader. This website is a good choice for older students.
You need to include a lot of questions.
You can choose for each game whether you want it to end after a specific time (for example, allowing 7 minutes of play by students) or once someone reaches a particular total. You can choose to continue the game until you reach your desired total. Students who are quick will be seeing the same questions over and over again unless the set contains a large number of questions. If you’re practicing a skill, such as naming notes in the staff, you may not have a problem with this. It is worth considering depending on the purpose of Blooket.
You cannot edit sets of questions other users have created.
You will have to create your set of questions if you find one that is similar but not exactly what you are looking for. It is not possible to copy sets of questions that have been created by other people and edit them.

You cannot see student data.
…You will not be able to access the account unless you pay for it. You will only get a report in the free version that tells you how many questions were answered correctly and incorrectly by the class, then for each student. You can’t see which questions were missed. Blooket is therefore a good option for review games, and NOT assessment. Each game is limited to 60 players.
Some games are complex.
When I tried Blooket with students for the first time, I told them they were my test subjects in trying out a new website at the time. Some games, like Gold Quest or Battle Royale, were simple to understand and students all knew how to play. Some games, like Cafe and Factory, require more patience and strategy as there are so many factors and options to consider. It is possible to briefly show the directions at the start of the game, but I’ve not seen a place that clearly outlines them for teachers before the game begins. Find some willing guinea-pigs to try it out or practice first!
Blooket Game Options
Gold Quest
This game involves a bit of luck and speed. Each question will be displayed on the device for students to answer. The questions can be answered at their own pace. They will get three chests if they answered correctly. Some chests contain gold, others have nothing and others allow you to steal gold from another player. Winners can be determined by who has the highest amount of gold after a certain time period or a specific amount of gold that a player has collected. This game is very popular in my classroom, and it’s a good place to begin learning Blooket.
Cafe
You need to be fast and focused as you answer questions correctly in order to restock and serve your goods. It was harder for the students to understand because they could upgrade their cafe. You can determine the winner by determining who has the highest amount of money at the end or setting a time limit. This game is also suitable for homework.
Factory
Students will need to answer questions quickly and use some strategy in order to unlock or upgrade Blooks. These are the cute avatars that Blooket uses. This game can be used for homework. When I did this with my students, one person was a clear winner because they understood how to earn fast money by upgrading their computers. Others had no clue what they were doing… including me!
Battle Royale
This game was fun, even though I was hesitant to use it with my students. This game involves students answering questions in pairs. This game can be played as a team-vs-team if your classroom does not have 1-1 devices. The student who answers correctly and quickly wins. In the next round, they are paired up with another competitor. This game cannot be played as a homework or assignment. It must be played at the same moment. The game cannot be played at your own pace.
Racing
Students must be fast and accurate in order to advance their Blook. It becomes more engaging as players gain power-ups that let them move forward faster or make other players move backwards if they answer questions correctly. You can set the number of questions that students need to answer correctly in order to win the race.
Crazy Kingdom
Another great option for a strategy game. This game is different because it is only meant to be used as homework. It is also not designed for everyone to play at once. This game’s goal is to correctly answer all the questions to run a kingdom by managing resources and dealing with the guests.
Tower of Doom
Another game that is only assigned for homework. The students can answer the questions on their own and collect the cards to help defeat the blocks.
Classic
This is a traditional trivia game that looks similar to Kahoot. Students must quickly answer questions in order to gain points and move up the leaderboard. It is not self-paced, as the same question will be shown to all students at the same time.
How to get started
It is super easy to set up your teacher account by going to www.blooket.com/signup and using an email address to get logged in. You can search for sets, or create your very own from the dashboard that appears on your screen as soon as you log in.
It is difficult to type correctly. Google wanted to go straight to blooket.com, so my students had to type it several times to get to the right spot. Add the link to Google Classroom or your website, or turn it into QR code that students can scan. Students will only need to add the ID of the game and select a nickname before they can start playing.
Blooket Review: Good or Bad
Blooket has a variety of benefits and disadvantages for students, teachers and learning groups. It is also geared towards parents. It has a number of game modes that are derived from one question set. Its simplicity allows teachers to easily create questions and set up game rooms.
The app’s eight game modes make it possible to learn at your own pace and compete with others, enhancing the learning experience. Students must navigate game modes without teacher assistance.
